Every trip you have taken is sitting in your library as a date and a place. Periplous reads them and gives them back as a timeline of your travels and a map of everywhere you have been.
The strata spine: one band per trip, as tall as the trip was long, in a colour taken from that trip's own photographs.
There is nothing to fill in. No trip to name, no date to enter, no account to make. You give Periplous access to your photo library and it works out where you have been, from the first geotagged photograph you ever took to the one you took last week.
Periplous reads the date and the location written beside a photograph. It never looks at what is in your pictures — nothing is recognised, labelled or described — and it never uploads them. There is no account, no analytics and no tracking. Everything happens on your device.
When it is not sure whether something was really a trip, it says so and asks, rather than putting a guess on your map.
The timeline, the map, the globe and every country you have been to are free, and stay free. Pro adds an unlimited want-to-go list, the whole of the statistics, a share card without our name on it, widgets, the time scrubber, and your travels exported as JSON, CSV or GPX.
Prices shown in US dollars; the App Store will show yours. A yearly subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends, and can be managed in your App Store account settings.
περίπλους — the log of a voyage, port by port, in order. The oldest surviving one describes the coast of West Africa; the best known catalogues every harbour of the Red Sea and what could be bought there. They are travel histories written down after the fact, which is exactly what your photo library is.
